long range

The better this kid gets at basketball, the more apparent it is that we are going to need a bigger place sooner rather than later.

tiny dancer

Jackson likes to watch the Ellen show with me in the afternoon. And by watch, I mean that he likes to DANCE for the few seconds that she dances and then he doesn't pay any attention to her for the rest of the hour-long program.

But today Ellen had on her show a guy named Joshua who is tap dancing in the New York subways in effort to raise money for his college tuition and Jackson was totally intent on dancing right along with him.

I had big, poofy bangs and did tap dance and ballet as a kid. Clearly, dance runs in our family's blood.

drama time

So we already know that Jackson likes sports and art but maybe he has his eye on the theater too...

a long shot

Jackson is a huge fan of playing basketball, as most folks know. But he's not just in it for the fun. He also likes to present himself with a challenge. Tonight, he showed us and buddy Gabriel how he could make a basket from all the way back by the kitchen sink...(sort of).

The boys were having a lot of fun tonight at our house. Here they are chatting it up over a bowl of goldfish crackers...a staple food item around here these days. (I buy the whole grain kind so that I feel better about the massive handfuls of them that Jackson shoves into his mouth at every opportunity.)
Dan and I don't know what got into him but for some reason, Jackson was giving out hugs constantly tonight and little Gabe was at the receiving end of much of that free love.
These two are buds for sure. Tonight they got a little rowdy and it was so stinkin' cute to watch! Take a peak for yourself...

After running back and forth a lot, the boys finally nestled in on the couch with Dan for story-time before bed.
On a very - and I mean VERY - random note:

Tonight as I was going through my evening ritual of looking for assorted golf balls, ping pong balls, and other balls underneath our furniture...I looked under our armoire as I usually do but found more than I bargained for. Usually I find a few balls, corks, and maybe a block or two. But tonight I found 2 golf balls and a ping pong ball but as I was reaching strategically with a golf club to reach the last ball I noticed some dark-colored fabric hanging down from the bottom drawer of the armoire. Knowing that we don't keep anything made of fabric in that drawer, I was confused and intrigued. Surely my eyes were mistaken. I reached up underneath the armoire and tugged at the fabric. What I pulled out was a dusty pair of ridiculously short - like shorter than Daisy Duke short - Abercrombie & Fitch shorts. We bought the armoire from Craig's List about 3 years ago and it would seem that we incidentally inherited these shorts from the previous owner as a bonus.

Thanks, but no thanks Hoochie Mama.

birthday girl

Yesterday was my birthday and it was definitely a really, really special day from start to finish.

When you wake up in the morning and the first thing you see is a Starbucks grande americano with cream sitting on your bedside table, you know right then that it's going to be a great day. Why can't I wake up to that sight and scent every day?

My birthday breakfast was fabulous! Dan spoiled me with my Starbucks and his infamous best-ever pancakes topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream.
Lunch wasn't too shabby either. My man and our little man were my dates to my favorite lunch spot, Panera. Jackson got a little cranky when we lingered there past his nap time. Here are some funny photos of our cranky pants fighting over a "cupcake" with me.Don't worry...a nap cast all those tears away and we had happy Jackson back in no time. Meanwhile, Dan was busy baking one of my favorite things: chocolate chip cookies. But not just any chocolate chip cookies! He made them with Ghiradelli chocolate chips! Now, THAT'S a birthday treat! Our house smelled amazing as they baked!Needless to say, I was one very happy birthday girl..
Oh, and this one-of-a-kind T-shirt isn't really what Dan got me for my birthday but I'm thinking that he's probably now wishing it was. We had a good laugh over it!Next stop was the beach because it was a gorgeous day out and it's hard to say no to Jackson when he asks to go see the ferry boats. The sun was beginning its slow descent behind the mountains and the colors in the sky were gorgeous as we walked in the sand and threw rocks into the water with our little ferry boat enthusiast. I had brought the camera with us so I could set it up to take a shot of the 3 of us. Unfortunately, I forgot that I'd left the battery charging in the kitchen so, sadly, there's no photo documentation of my birthday beach walk.

We left the beach in pursuit of a cupcake because Jackson had been promised a cupcake on my birthday. We went to a cute cupcake boutique called Pinka Bella Cupcakes where the men picked out their cupcakes and I abstained in order to save room for more dessert that evening. Dan picked out a Key Lime cupcake and Jackson chose vanilla with chocolate frosting. Here's some video of the cupcake carnage...

To wrap up the day, I headed to the home of our friends, The Crowls. Becky - the hostess with the mostest - had planned and executed a "Jill's Favorite Things" party. She and my girlfriends showered me with a myriad of my favorite things like BBQ chicken pizza, chocolate chip cookies, cherry coke, daisies, dark chocolates, Ireland photos, some of my fave tunes, and photos of my gorgeous husband and son. It was such a fun night with these amazing ladies and I felt truly celebrated.I felt unbelievably blessed by God as my head hit the pillow that night.

21-month-old Jackson

Where is the time going? Dan is quickly approaching his 2nd year anniversary as an employee at Boeing and I'm about to turn 31. Life is moving fast! Speaking of fast...

Today we woke up and had a 21-month-old yelling to us from his crib "Good nap! Good nap! Cockadoodle-doo! Cocka-doo!" It seems like just yesterday that he was a tiny newborn snuggled between us in bed because we were too enamored by him to put him in his pack 'n play located just inches away.

21 months. Wow. That means Jackson's already three quarters of the way toward his 2nd birthday - which translates into 2nd birthday party - which means I'm starting to browse on Pinterest for party ideas - and that means that things are about to get crazily crafty here at the Blankenship House!

Life with 21-month-old Jackson is just plain fun. Dan and I laugh constantly at the funny little character that is always busily running around our house and simultaneously melting our hearts as we fall more and more in love with being his parents. I'll try to give you some snapshot views of what Jackson is like these days...Jackson's favorite things...
Favorite color: No crayon seems esteemed over the others. He's color neutral as far as I can tell.
Favorite number: definitely the number 6
Favorite letter: W
Favorite activities: playing basketball and golf, coloring/drawing, throwing rocks at the beach, spotting airplanes and helicopters in the sky, splashing in water/puddles, seeing the ferry boat dock, eating, looking at photos of particular friends on Facebook, and reading books
Favorite food: chocolate chip cookiesFavorite place to go: the post office (I'm not sure what is so fun about it.)
Favorite bedtime stories: currently we read Snuggle Puppy and The Going to Bed Book each night and before each nap (Except when Jackson "reads it himself" but I'll get to that in a minute.)
Favorite golfer: other than his daddy, it's John Huh (because it's so much fun to say his name)
Favorite thing to watch on TV/DVD: he still will only actually watch his 80's kid's worship songs DVD but he does look forward to seeing Ellen dance each afternoon at 4 o'clock
Favorite song: it's sort of dependent on the day but lately he's favored Jingle Bells, Happy Birthday (because it usually involves eating cupcakes), and a couple of randoms from his 80's praise DVD like "Rock My Soul" and "God Said It, I Believe It"...it's HILARIOUS to hear him sing any of these!
Favorite clothing: He's pretty much against wearing pants these days but I force him into them anyway. His favorite shirts are his Elmo and Buzz Lightyear shirts.

Some common phrases:
"Booyah!" or "Pi-yow!" when he's sinking baskets in the hoop.
"Da-da lay down!" is what he demands of Dan so that he can stand on his stomach and shoot baskets from his perch.
"Squeaky floor" is the excuse Dan taught Jackson to use when he lets out a toot.
"The human head weighs 8 pounds." Dan taught Jackson that line from Jerry Maguire.
"Hold you" which of course is supposed to be "Hold me" but it's so cute when he says it wrong.

He LOVES bath time and would spend hours splashing away in the tub if we'd let him.
With Jackson constantly learning new words and stringing them together in sentences more and more, conversations with him are becoming more fun and funny. Here's an example of a talk we had recently...
Jackson (singing): "Happy birthday to you..."
Me: "It's going to be my birthday soon and you can sing that to mommy."
Jackson: "Cupcakes!?"
Me: "Yea, maybe we can have some cupcakes for my birthday."
Jackson (shouting very excitedly): "So fun! Good idea! Happy birthday to you!"
Seriously, he cracks me up.Now, the past couple of days Jackson has been seeking his independence at nap time and bed time. Usually our routine has been to "snuggle" in his rocking chair while reading a story or two before bed. Now Jackson says he wants to "snuggle self" and he's reading his own story while he sits in his chair all by himself. Tonight Dan and I were listening from the other room as he sang and "read" through his Snuggle Puppy book alone in his bedroom. Thankfully, his independence is limited and he still seeks a few minutes of snuggles and hugs before succumbing to sleep. Oh man, I'm going to miss these snuggles when he's outgrown them altogether!
Jackson still likes to sleep with his Goodnight Moon book. Well, most of it anyway. It fell apart awhile back and has since been replaced with a brand new copy (thanks to Grandma Jean) but he likes to sleep with half of the well-loved copy. And he's still sleeping with his little buns up in the air! Here is some more photo fun:
